How to commission a pet portrait

If you would like to commission a custom pet portrait, e-mail me ( dcamerond@aol.com) or fill in the contact form to let me know. If possible, attach a high resolution photo (or scan of a photo) of the pet you would like me to draw. You also need to decide whether you would like a charcoal or pastel portrait and whether it should be a head study or a full body drawing. If you are unsure, I am happy to discuss this with you.

The most important element: the PHOTO of your pet
Capturing the essence of your pet through artwork begins with obtaining the right photos. Since I don't have a personal connection with your pet, it's crucial to consider that my drawings are based solely on what is visible in the provided images. To ensure a faithful representation, please keep in mind that photos taken in poor lighting, with a flash (resulting in "red" eyes), from too far away, or too close may hinder my ability to capture essential details. Remember, it's these details that bring out the unique looks and personality of YOUR pet, with their eyes often playing a pivotal role in the final depiction.

How long will it take?
I will let you know my estimated finish date when I receive your order. I will try to draw your portrait as soon as I can once I’ve received your photo and would usually allow around two weeks to complete a picture. I will try to make birthday presents a priority, but do try and send your order well in advance to avoid disappointment. The same goes for Christmas pet portraits. Order your portrait early to avoid the queue.

What if I don’t like the portrait?
I adhere to a no-risk policy to ensure your satisfaction. Once I complete your drawing, I'll email you a scan or digital photo of it. If, for any reason, you're not pleased with the result, there's no obligation to purchase. Your happiness with my artwork is paramount, and I'm committed to making adjustments until you are entirely satisfied. If, despite our efforts, the artwork doesn't meet your expectations, you won't need to proceed with the payment – it's as straightforward as that! Rest assured, you have nothing to lose.

Additionally, I can provide you with photos showcasing the 'work in progress,' allowing you to witness the gradual evolution of your portrait.

What is the best medium for pet portraits?

I have been drawing for many years and have found that for me, the best mediums to use for these kind of portraits are either pastels or charcoal. Which to choose is, quite often, just a matter of taste. Charcoal is always a great option, not just for black animals. It can give a very dramatic image.

However, for animal portraits, I personally prefer colour (pastel) – as the eyes can look fantastic in colour! It’s entirely up to you though and I am always happy to discuss the options with my customers.

IMPORTANT!
Please note that I retain the reproduction/copy rights of my artwork; no drawing may be copied, reproduced or published without my permission. I reserve the right to use a scan of my drawings on my website or for advertising purposes.
